A trip to St. Peter in Chains Cathedral in Cincinnati, Ohio
St.Peter in Chains Cathedral is the Roman Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Ohio. The structure of the church is Greek revival style; It is located at 8th and Plums Street in downtown-Cincinnati. This is the most amazing unique church that I have ever known about because of the huge work done and special material used to construct the church. The construction of the church was started in May, 1841, and accomplished in November, 1845. Here are some specialties of the church:
The Marble: It took 18 months to install 600 tons of marble that covere 15,000 square feet of flooring, wall surfaces, stairs, and altars.
The Mosaic: The monumental mosaic describing Christ reigning in Glory is made of colorful Venetian glass, and especially the background of the mosaic is accentuated by 24-karat gold. Having been shined, the mosaic reflects amazing colorful lights.
The Stations of the Cross: They are pieces of art depicting the passion of Christ scenes in the style of ancient Greek paintings on pottery. The Cross Stations are pieces of art worked by Carl Zimmerman. Upon looking at them, people feel like they are watching a living comic book.
The Cathedral Organ: This is one of the most complex organs I've ever known: it is composed of 3,320 pipes that are located in three different places, at the end of each of the sanctuary galleries and in the rear gallery. It used to make wonderful sounds in the Church.
It is recommended that you visit the Cathedral whenever you have a chance to go to Cincinnati. For me, It is also the right place to learn about the ancient Greek style of architecture in North American.
